This week the special education summer study met in Pierre. The committee is comprised of both House and Senate legislators and is chaired by Mary Duvall (District 24). The committee heard from Secretary of Education, Don Kirkegaard, and Department of Education staff, Department of Revenue, Legislative Research staff, and three school districts: Bon Homme, Brookings, and Watertown. The committee received an overview of special education history, legal requirements, services provided, and how the identification of need works for South Dakota students. The next meeting is scheduled for July 26.
