Governor Daugaard contemplates calling a Special Session

Governor Dennis Daugaard may call a special legislative session after a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision of South Dakota v. Wayfair. Our Attorney General, Marty Jackley, successfully argued the case which was decided in the state’s favor. The Wayfair decision could yield millions of dollars in online sales taxes.

County Commission adopts the FY2019 Provisional Budget

The Minnehaha Commission adopted the provisional budget of $86,873,328. The $86,873,328 FY 2019 Provisional Budget includes dollars appropriated for the funds including General, Building, Highway, Fire, 24-7 Sobriety, E-911, Bond Redemption, and other miscellaneous funds.

Minnehaha County Commission adopts legislative agenda

County Commissioners voted this week to approve nine resolutions for submission to the South Dakota Association of County Commissioners for their consideration and to be adopted in their legislative agenda for the 2019 legislative session.

Pheasantland Industries

The Commissioners received an update from Pheasantland Industries. Pheasantland is a division of the Department of Corrections that produces high quality, low cost products for state agencies, nonprofits, and state employees.

School District
School Board approves $190 million bond issue

On Monday evening, the Sioux Falls School Board approved a $190 million general obligation bond issue that will be put to a public vote on Tuesday, September 18. It marks the final step in an 18-month project that involved multiple public input sessions, task force meetings, and community wide surveys.

U.S. Senate confirms Veteran Affairs Secretary

Earlier this week, the Senate voted 86-9 to confirm former congressional staffer and Pentagon veteran Robert Wilkie to lead the troubled Department of Veterans Affairs. Wilkie’s first order of business will be to reduce wait times, which often extend beyond 30 days, for veterans seeking medical appointments.
